What is a bedside crib?
A bedside crib (also called a bassinet or co-sleeper) is a small baby crib that is attached to your adult bed, allowing your infant to sleep comfortably next to you. This is a type of safe co-sleeping that doesn't increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) like bedsharing, and can help you bond with your new arrival.
The cots usually come with a side that can be lowered, so you can easily reach your newborn throughout the night for feeding and comforting. This is particularly helpful for mums recovering from a c-section. Many of them are foldable or portable which means you can use them for trips and as an interim solution for infants that aren't yet ready to transition into a crib that is large enough.
Choose a crib that has a mattress that is breathable, as well as an extra-safe cover that will protect your baby from stains. You may also want to buy baby-safe accessories such as a blanket or teether.
If you're looking for a long-term option, some cribs come with conversion kits that allow you to transform them into a cot or a toddler bed at the time of need. This can extend their lifespan and make the transition smoother. Some even have a removable top section that converts into a bassinet, and some can be used on the regular or high-rise adult bed. This is an excellent choice for families who are planning to travel frequently or switch between bedrooms in the evening. Consider the dimensions of your room to make sure you can be able to fit in the crib comfortably. Many cribs have risers that can be added to create an incline to accommodate babies with reflux.

It was easy to move from room to room, and our mum testers felt it was the perfect size for a bedside crib. They also appreciated the large storage basket, which is ideal for stowing spare bedding or nappies.
This is a great choice for parents who wish to sleep in a co-sleeping bed but don't want to share their bed. Or if one of the partners suffers from mobility issues, such as arthritis or back pain. Our mom testers loved that they could easily access their child in the Iora and that it had an option to have a reflux incline which helped to reduce gas.
Our mothers appreciate the fact that the mattress is in line with NICE guidelines that state to put the baby in the crib or Moses basket on its own (with no blankets, toys, pillows, etc). They also state that the mattress is firm and comfortable for babies and is easy to find sheets for. It's not as light as some of the smaller cribs on our list, so if you prefer something lighter and easier for you to move around, consider a different option.
